Winter in Yarrawalla

August 31, 2016

We have several farms, one of which is registered as organic where we grow our Billabong Organics apples and grains which we sometimes make into hay.  The other farms are farmed conventionally where we grow grains, including wheat, barley, canola (not GM), faba beans as well as making hay.

We finished sowing our grains this year just as it started raining, which is miraculous.  We have limited irrigation and the rainfall ensures our crops have the best chance of establishment.  Success requires more rain in September, or irrigation at that point.

We irrigate our crops during the year as required, but we irrigate our apples every fourth night from about November until May.  This provides a wonderfully productive food source for many birds, insects and animals, including magpies and wallabies.
